EPC Energy Oy

Flexible and Intelligent Energy Solutions

About the Company

EPC Energy Oy operates on Fingrid’s reserve markets as a Balancing Service Provider (BSP) and power control supplier for the Finnish electricity transmission grid. The company was established in 2024. Our operations are backed by deep Finnish expertise in the energy sector and a broad network of partners. Our equipment is deployed at numerous sites across Finland, with warehouses and testing facilities in Southern and Middle Finland.

Fingrid’s reserve market is a marketplace designed to keep electricity generation and consumption in balance at a system frequency of 50 hertz.. As electricity production and consumption must always be equal in real time, Fingrid procures balancing and reserve services from companies, and increasingly also from households to ensure system stability

  • Maintaining system balance: If electricity consumption increases or generation (e.g. wind power) suddenly decreases, Fingrid activates reserves to increase generation or reduce consumption.
  • Market-based operation: Fingrid ei omista kaikkia säätöresursseja itse, vaan kilpailuttaa ne markkinoilla.

  • Participants: More than 80 companies operate as Balancing Service Providers (BSPs), including power producers, industrial facilities, high-power consumption units, and energy storage systems (batteries).

Technology – Systems and Operation

EPC Energy Oy designs, manufactures, and supplies power containers and high-power load units installed in the Finnish transmission grid to support system balancing. The containers are remotely controlled, typically via a 5G connection. When activated, the power containers consume surplus power from the transmission grid. The load element primarily consists of a heating system, either air-based heating or alternatively water-based heating.

EPC Energy Oy also offers battery energy storage systems (BESS) in cooperation with selected partners. All systems operate using intelligent control technology that optimizes power usage and, when required, load scheduling and output levels.

The power containers and devices are available in various sizes. The smallest units start at 100 kW, and the largest exceed 2,000 kW. Supported voltage levels include 400 V, 690 V, 10 kV, and 20 kV. The total installed capacity can be adjusted according to site conditions and available electrical capacity. There is no fixed upper limit to total power, as multiple units can be installed in parallel as long as sufficient capacity is available. Containers are suitable for outdoor installation and can also be stacked.

When operating, the containers and devices generate heat energy almost equivalent to their electrical load, which can be utilized, for example, for supplementary space heating. Air-based heat is blown directly into the desired space. In water-heated systems, the heat energy can be connected either to a building’s hydronic heating system or to a district heating network.

We Lease and Purchase Premises for Equipment Operation

We are continuously seeking premises to lease or purchase where our equipment can be installed. If you own or manage properties with significant available electrical capacity and are looking for a tenant or buyer, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We pay rent for the space occupied by our equipment and cover our own electricity consumption. If the available power capacity is high (over 1,000 kW), we can agree on a revenue-sharing model with the property owner, where both parties participate in the reserve markets and share the generated revenue.

Additional Services

If you are interested in the energy sector and reserve markets, our company can support you through consulting and collaborative project development. We provide consulting services, system design, project management, and access to qualified experts and implementation partners.

Together with our partners, we can also supply and sell power equipment, battery energy storage systems, and their control systems. Through our cooperation network, we are also able to deliver solar energy systems when required.
